Canada's WestJet adds several winter routes, TSA lets you keep your shoes on, Spain fines several airlines for competition violations, loads of new routes to share.

New and Proposed Routes  

Air Arabia (G9) has expanded its network from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (SHJ), by adding four new European destinations in December. The new routes connect Sharjah to Munich (MUC), Naples, Italy (NAP); Krakow, Poland (KRK); and Budapest, Hungary (BUD). These additions enhance the airline's presence in Europe, offering passengers more travel options and convenience. The new services aim to boost connectivity between the UAE and Europe, catering to both leisure and business travelers.

Saudia (SV) will begin 3x weekly Boeing 787-9 flights from Dammam (DMM) to London Heathrow (LHR) on November 5. This route was last flown in October 2010.


China Eastern Airlines (MU) is taking advantage of their ability to overly Russian airspace, launching several European routes this summer:

  • Nanjing (NKG) to Paris deGaulle (CDG) began weekly Boeing 777-300/ER flights yesterday

  • Shangai Pudong (PVG) to Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) begins 3x weekly Airbus A330-200 flights on July 17

  • Shanghai Pudong to Geneva (GVA) and Milan Malpensa (MXP) commenced in mid-June.

Arajet (DM) has applied with Dominican Republic authorities to begin service to seven more U.S. cities, with six from Punta Cana: Atlanta (ATL), Denver (DEN), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles, Philadelphia (PHL), and Providence, R.I. (PVD). Arajet also hopes to add a Santo Domingo (SDQ) to San Francisco (SFO) run as well. Credit for this news goes to Mr. Reliable, Ishrion.

Breeze Airways (MX) is adding twice weekly flights from Fort Lauderdale to(FLL) to Akron, Ohio (CAK) and Wilmington, N.C. (ILM) no November 5 and 7, respectively. Additionally, twice weekly fruns from Raleigh, N.C. (RDU) to Manchester, N.H. (MHT) and Wilmington, N.C. to Akron, Ohio start on November 6 and 7. All routes will be flown by Airbus A220-300 equipment.

United Airlines (UA) is adding a pair of regional routes from Columbia, Mo. (COU) on September 25: twice daily to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and once a day to Denver. Both routes will be flown by SkyWest Airlines (OO) under the United Connection banner.

Seasonal Routes

Canada’s WestJet (WS) has announced quite a few winter seasonal routes, as you can see below:

Suspended Routes

WestJet has pushed back the return of flights from Kelowna (YLW) to Seattle (SEA), with flights now set to return on October 26 rather than in September.

Delta Air Lines (DL) has extended its suspension of flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Mexico City (MEX), with the route now going dark from August 3 until April 13.

Neos (NO) is shortening its seasonal service from Palermo, Italy (PMO) to New York Kennedy, with October flights axed. The route now concludes its season on September 28.

Air Canada (AC) is suspending another pair of U.S. routes in the fall:

  • Halifax, N.S. (YHZ) to Tampa (TPA) from October 26 through December 21

  • Ottawa (YOW) to Tampa from October 26 until December 17

Dropped Routes

Brazil’s Azul (AD) will end service from Recife (REC) to Orlando (MCO) on August 8.

WestJet has zeroed out all flights from WInnipeg (YWG) to Los Angeles.

Aviation Security

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented changes to its security protocols, allowing passengers to leave their shoes on during screening at most airport checkpoints. This shift aims to improve the efficiency and speed of the security process, reducing wait times for travelers. However, TSA officers retain the discretion to ask passengers to remove their shoes if deemed necessary for additional screening. This adjustment reflects ongoing efforts to balance security effectiveness with passenger convenience. Shoes were first required to be removed in 2006, so, its been a minute.

TSA reports that 94 percent of passengers have presented a Real ID since the beginning of full enforcement of the Real ID Act on May 7. A REAL ID is a form of identification that complies with federal standards set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It was established under the REAL ID Act of 2005 to enhance the security of state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards.

CATSA screeners processed 5,806,482 passengers in June at the 17 largest airports in Canada, a 2.5 percent annual increase. For the first half of the year, Canadian traffic is up two percent compared to 2024, with 30,900,551 passengers at those 17 largest airports.

Aviation Industry News 🗞️ 

Air India Express (IX) is facing scrutiny after allegedly ignoring regulatory directives to replace a part on its Airbus A320neo engines prone to failure. According to reports, the airline failed to replace the high-pressure turbine rear hub, instead falsifying records to show compliance. This issue is linked to engine durability problems with Pratt & Whitney's PW1100G engines, which have affected multiple airlines.

Turkish Airlines' (TK) low-cost subsidiary AJet (VF) has signed a deal with SMBC Aviation Capital for the lease of four Airbus A321neo aircraft. The agreement will see AJet expand its fleet with these new, fuel-efficient planes, supporting the airline's growth plans.

💀 A man died in a horrifying incident on Tuesday after being sucked into a plane engine at Milan Bergamo (BGY) when he apparently walked into the running jet engine. Emergency services responded quickly, but the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident, including how the man, neither a passenger or airline employee, got onto the ramp is under investigation by authorities, and the airport has expressed its condolences to the family. The incident caused disruptions, but airport operations have resumed.

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Bryan Bedford, former CEO of Republic Airways (YX), as the new permanent FAA Administrator in a 53–43 vote. Bedford, who will serve a five-year term, steps into the role amid heightened concerns for aviation safety following January’s mid-air collision near Washington, D.C., which tragically killed 67 people, as well as staffing shortages within the air traffic controllers division.

Air Serbia (JU) flew 476,435 passengers last month, a healthy yearly increase of over eight percent. Air Serbia flew 4,669 flights during the month.

Swissport, a leading ground handling and airport services provider, has announced a $1.5 billion investment over the next five years to drive sustainability in its operations. The investment will focus on electrifying its fleet of ground handling equipment and introducing eco-friendly technologies across its global network. This initiative aims to reduce the company's carbon footprint and support the aviation industry's transition to more sustainable practices.

Spain's National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has imposed fines totaling €179 million on several European airlines - EasyJet (U2), Norwegian (DY), Ryanair (FR), Volotea (V7), and Vueling (VY) - for violating competition rules at Spanish airports. The airlines, including major EU carriers, were found to have engaged in practices that restricted competition and infringed antitrust regulations. The fines mark one of the largest penalties ever issued in the aviation sector in Spain, highlighting the country's efforts to ensure fair competition in the industry.

Rental car revenue at Denver totaled $41.8 million in May, down two percent from May 2024. Hertz had the largest share of the market with 18 percent of all cars rented.

U.S. scheduled service airlines in May used 1.639 billion gallons of fuel, four percent more fuel than in April 2025 (1.576 billion gallons) and 0.4 percent less fuel than May 2024. The cost per gallon of fuel in May 2025 ($2.21) was down 9 cents (4.1 percent) from April 2025 ($2.31) and down 44 cents (16.5 percent) from May 2024.

United Airlines (UA) will resume 14x weekly flights from Newark, N.J. (EWR) to Tel Aviv (TLV) on July 21; Lufthansa (LH) returns on August 1.

A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 (D-AIHZ) that was damaged by ground equipment at Boston (BOS) on Saturday was flown back to Frankfurt (FRA) on Tuesday for further assessment and possible repairs. What was notable about this was the trans-Atlantic return was an unpressurized ferry flight, with the aircraft sticking below 10,000 feet for a journey that took over 10 ½ hours.

Allegiant Travel Company has agreed to sell its Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor, Florida, to Blackstone Real Estate for $200 million. The resort, which opened in 2018, features 184 rooms and offers various amenities. As for the financial burden on Allegiant, the company's investment in the resort has been substantial, with $430 million spent on development compared to the $200 million sale price. This means Allegiant will likely take a significant loss on the sale, potentially around $230 million. However, shedding this asset could help the company reduce its debt and focus on more profitable areas of its business. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions.

N905NN, an American Airlines (AA) Boeing 737-823 in the retro “AstroJet” livery has returned to revenue service after being damaged in Philadelphia in mid-December.

Hungarian discounter Wizz Air (W6) flew 5,880,901 passengers in June, a nearly 11 percent annual increase from June 2024. Wizz Air’s system-wide load factor for the month was 92.1 percent.

The All Nippon Airways (ANA) Group flew 4,239,588 passengers in May, lifted by a 4.2 percent annual uptick in domestic traffic and ten percent in international operations.

Delta Air Lines (DL) and ITA Airways (AZ) will end their codesharing agreement on August 31.

AirBaltic (BT) has reported a record-breaking load factor of 84 percent for June, despite a slight decrease in the number of flights operated. The airline's capacity, measured in available seat kilometers, rose by seven percent, while the number of passengers increased by nine percent to 497,800. The load factor improvement was driven by high demand on popular routes and efficient flight scheduling. AirBaltic flies 50 Airbus A220-300s to nearly 130 routes across Europe.

JetBlue Airways (B6) has tentatively scheduled its final Embraer E190 revenue flight for September 4, with a quick hop from New York Kennedy (JFK) to Boston, as Fl. 1900.

Transavia (HV) is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a retro livery on one of its Airbus A321neo (PH-YHD) aircraft. The special design pays homage to the airline's heritage and history. This unique livery is a nod to the airline's past while still showcasing its modern brand identity. The retro design will be featured on the aircraft for a period of time, serving as a visual celebration of Transavia's six decades in operation.

🇦🇺 VH-YXT, an Airbus A320-232 with Jetstar (JQ), was wfu and ferried on July 9 to Bordeaux, France (BOD) where it was returned to its lessor.
